- Safely operate a 30’, 40’ or 60’ transit vehicle in high-density rush hour traffic and all weather conditions
- Follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and ETS regulations and standards
- Follow maps to meet timed schedules transporting passengers on predetermined routes
- Check the bus for operational readiness before entering into service
- Deal with diverse and challenging customer situations while ensuring your own safety and that of your passengers
- Monitor fares and provide transit information
- Contribute to Edmonton Transit's professional image by demonstrating responsible and ethical behaviour in all activities
- Keep yourself mentally and physically prepared for a variety of shifts including split-shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays
- Grade 12 or General Education Development (GED)
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence or provincial equivalent (non-probationary & non-graduated). Applicants must have held a valid licence for the last 3 consecutive years
- Possession of an Alberta Air Brake Endorsement and Alberta Class 2 driver's licence written knowledge test is required prior to training
- A minimum 5-year Driver's Abstract must be provided showing no more than 3 demerits (or equivalent) and no more than one (1) moving violation within 5 years as well as no past, or pending license suspensions nor Criminal Code suspensions or convictions within 5 years. Non-driving related suspensions of registry services if indicated, must show a reinstatement date. Demerits reduced by attending a defensive driver training course will not be accepted. A 5-year driver's abstract must be obtained within 14 days of the Driving Assessment date
- Ability to understand, speak and write English in order to comprehend Edmonton Transit policies, effectively communicate with the traveling public and report on incidents involving safety and/or service
- Demonstrated success dealing with the public in a position that requires excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, conflict resolution and independent decision-making skills
- Knowledge of City of Edmonton geography (landmarks, street grid system) and strong map reading skills with the ability to adapt easily to frequently changing schedule
- Knowledge of Edmonton Transit Services
- Candidates will be required to take both a pre-employment medical examination and a functional abilities assessment that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. Candidates must meet the physical demands of the position including walking, squatting, lifting, and twisting in order to safely provide passengers with assistance and operate a bus and it's controls
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector check
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
- Assets:
- Recent and relevant professional driving experience
- Basic computer skills to engage with on-board navigation and to choose shifts
- Possession of a Class 1 or Class 2 driver’s licence with air brake certification
